Last week was spent in North Wales conducting a Mountain Leader training course based around the Snowdon national park. The first day saw glorious weather with a High pressure dominating. That was the only blue sky seen all week. Their were 4 of us on the course, all good blokes which made for a great fun week. The photos below give some insight into what we got up to...
About to head up to Glyder Fach. This is the car park at Idwal Cottage.
On the path up to Glyder Fach. Weather not ideal. Summits lost in the clag.
All of us on the infamous Cantilever. I'm the second from the end. A thin layer of ice on the slab made it a little interesting under foot.
The clag starting to lift and the views opened up...
Looking into the bowl of The Nameless Cwn which is North of Glyder Fawr. We had to get down to the bottom to get the minibus.
Looking back up the first 50 mtrs of descent on Y Gribin as we head back to the start.
Heading up into Cwm Eigiau towards Carnedd Llewelyn on the overnight camp phase. Weather forecast was the worst of the week with forecasts of winds in excess of 50 mph on summits and sleet/hail. Moral was high...
Carnedd Llewelyn in the clag. When we started there was no signs of snow on the summit, however each time the clag lifted it was getting whiter as the wintery showers where dropping snow and sleet onto the summit. The wind was brutal on the summit, which we didn't make due to the conditions. Instead we headed to Foel Grach where the wind was strong enough to blow us all off our feet during one memorable gust! Navigated on the summitt towards the Bothy we were going to stay the night in.
Night navigation phase into the Bothy near Dulyn Reservoir. In total 12 people were squeezed into the bothy for the night. Still more preferable than erecting tents at night in wind and rain especially as there was a wood burning stove! The conditions in the morning made it hard to leave the santuary of the Bothy as we headed back to the start.
A great week with some challenging conditions, lots learnt and revised and some good company.
